For Immediate Release Feb 14, 2008 Contact: Nefertiti Austin (818) 207-4816 Public Notice of Application to the California Department of Education for 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Funding The Brotherhood Crusade and the African American Unity Center (AAUC) intend to apply to the California Department of Education to receive a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant. The grant will enhance the academic assistance, educational enrichment, and family literacy opportunities currently provided at Horace Mann Junior High School to complement the students’ regular academic program and offer families of participating students educational and development opportunities. Brotherhood Crusade and AAUC in collaboration with corporate partners like the State Farm Youth Advisory Board and Verizon (Thinkfinity®) currently provide a range of high-quality services to support student learning and development. These services include tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance, academic enrichment (such as financial literacy, anger management, etiquette, grammar, table manners, and appreciation of diversity), community service opportunities, music, art, sports, physical fitness, and cultural activities. These services are further enhanced by celebrity, political, and corporate keynote speakers such as Los Angeles Lakers star Chris Mihm, who bring messages of support and encourage the students to succeed in school as well as in life. In addition, the organizations collaborate with Microsoft to offer business computer and vocational training through the Unlimited Potential® Program as well as with other corporate partners to provide additional family literacy training programs, including financial literacy, parenting, domestic violence education and assistance, substance abuse education, parent-child communication, parent as teacher instruction, adult education referral, basic education skills and GED completion referral, and job placement assistance.
