An Invitation to Salute Cathy Hughes - A Testament to African American Achievement
The Brotherhood Crusade will proudly honor TV-One Chairperson and Radio One, Inc. Founder Cathy Hughes, with the 2007 Walter Bremond Pioneer of African American Achievement Award, Friday, November 2nd, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Ms. Hughes began her career in radio at Howard University in 1973 when she was offered a job as a lecturer at the School of Communications. Eventually, she would rise through the ranks to become General Manager of the university's radio station WHUR. Later, Ms. Hughes acquired her own radio station to eventually oversee 70 radio stations in nine major markets in the U.S. As of 2007, Hughes serves as the Chairperson of Radio One, Inc. and her son, Alfred Liggins, III, is the CEO and President.
In January 2004, Radio One launched TV-One, a national cable and satellite television network, which bills itself as the "lifestyle and entertainment network for African-American adults." Hughes interviews prominent African-Americans for the network's talk program “TV-One on One.”
Ms. Hughes has combined beauty, brains, talent and tenacity to successfully open doors to the most powerful currency in the world – information. She is a role model for African-Americans, a chancellor for African American Women, and welcomes the challenge to bring others through the media ranks with her. She epitomizes Brotherhood Crusade’s motto: Helping People Help Themselves; and for that we honor her with our most prestigious award.
